Winter Motorcycle Riding Tips
If you decide to continue riding your motorcycle through the winter, there are special precautions you need to take. Remember that road conditions may be more slippery and drivers may be more distracted. Follow these tips to keep yourself safe this winter.
Wear Proper Motorcycle Riding Gear
Just like in any other season, you need to wear appropriate riding gear in order to protect yourself. The most important item you need to wear is a helmet. Ideally, your helmet should have a fog resistant face shield to protect your face and keep the cold out. Wear long sleeves and long pants. These two items should be wind and water resistant to protect your from the elements. Invest in protective boots and gloves to keep the cold out. These items will help you be more comfortable and safe as you ride through the winter roads.
Inspect Your Tires
Your tires are very important in the winter months. Inspect your tires and pay special attention to the tread, making sure it's not too worn. If your tires are worn, it's a good idea to invest in new ones. Increased traction will help prevent skids, slipping and hydroplaning. The winter cold will affect your tire pressure, so check your air ;pressure every time you fuel up.
Be Cautious of Winter Road Conditions
The outdoor temperatures and winter storms are sure to cause dangerous conditions on the road. Be extra careful when heading out and ensure you're awake and alert. Since most drivers get distracted by weather conditions, be extra cautious when riding near other vehicles. Avoid driving through puddles in order to avoid slips and skids. Be on the lookout for icy patches on the road than can cause you to slip. Debris on the road can also hide dangerous potholes and bumps that may be dangerous.
Check the Forecast Before Heading Out
Before heading out on your motorcycle, check the weather forecast and traffic conditions. If the weather is stormy or snowy, consider leaving your motorcycle at home. It's better not to risk the dangers of riding your motorcycle in those conditions. If things are particularly bad, you might need to postpone or cancel your plans. Your safety should be your number one concern.

How to Store Your Motorcycle This Winter
If you chose to store your motorcycle for the winter, there are specific recommendations you should follow. These storage tips can help you store your motorcycle properly this winter.
Change Your Oil
Before storing your motorcycle you will need to give it a ;
synthetic oil change. While your motorcycle is in storage for months, the oil in it can become acidic. As this happens, it may become corrosive and actually cause harm to your engine. Change the oil before storing it and again once you are ready to use your motorcycle.
Take Care of the Battery
While your motorcycle is in storage, the battery should be taken care of. Clean the posts on your battery before storing and grease the bolts to prevent corrosion. Keep your battery charging while in storage to prevent having it lose charge. You can hook it up to a battery tender to prevent overcharging it.
Wrap Your Motorcycle Properly
Before wrapping your motorcycle, place an exhaust plug in the exhaust pipe to keep rodents out. Use a mildew resistant cover in order to keep moisture out and mildew from collecting under the wrap. Store your motorcycle indoors and on stand to keep the tires off the ground.
